Insulation 101: It’s hot! Is it my HVAC or Insulation?
July 5, 2022
During the hot summer months, many homeowners find it hard to keep their house cool. Your first thought may be to call their local HVAC company for an A/C check or added freon. But is that really what you need?
Whether your A/C is working properly or not, it’s common for HVAC companies to charge a $75-150 service fee just to take a look, then charge for any service work done to your air-conditioning unit. Before shoveling out cash for these services, take a look at the below items to find out whether your hot house may be a symptom of your HVAC or your INSULATION.
Signs that HVAC is the problem:
- Your A/C unit is older than 15 years
- Your A/C unit needs frequent repairs
- Your vents are blowing warm or room-temperature air
Signs that INSULATION is the problem:
- Your vents are blowing cool air
- It is hotter upstairs than downstairs
- It is hotter in some parts of the house
- Your energy bills are high in the summer and/or winter
- Your home temperature changes throughout the day
- You need to adjust the thermostat often
Signs that both your HVAC and INSULATION are the problem:
- In some cases, it could be BOTH your HVAC and INSULATION!
- 90% of homes in the United States are under-insulated, so yours likely is too.
- If your HVAC isn’t working properly, it’s important to have it fixed immediately to cool off in the hot summer months. After fixing or replacing your HVAC, you may still notice high energy bills, inconsistent temperatures, or you’re A/C running constantly, which are all signs that you also need more insulation.
- Protect your HVAC investment with an insulation upgrade. Proper insulation will maintain indoor temperatures and extend the life of your A/C unit.
