Fall Checklist for Protecting Your Home in Winter

While summer seems to be sticking around even longer than usual this year, winter is coming! This year the Old Farmer's Almanac is predicting a mild and dry winter for Texas. Unfortunately, even during warmer winters, we can still get brief Arctic blasts that can lead to costly home damage such as burst pipes. Fall is a great time to make sure your home is ready for any surprises Old Man Winter throws our way.

One thing you can do to prepare for cold weather before it arrives is to make sure your home is properly insulated. From traditional fiberglass batting to spray foam, there are various options for keeping your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. We recommend taking the following steps to protect your home this winter:

1. Test your furnace to make sure it is operating properly BEFORE you need it. Now is a great time to schedule fall maintenance on your HVAC system.
2. Examine any water pipes in your attic that are above the insulation and make sure they are wrapped in insulated material.
3. Use a measuring tape to check that your current insulation meets the current building code standard minimum depth of 13 inches.
4. Check for areas that may be lacking proper insulation coverage. Sometimes rodents or contractors doing work in your attic can displace insulation and leave some spots unprotected. Some exterior walls may be lacking insulation as well.
